Greg V. Etter

The wide-ranging experience of international arbitrator Greg V. Etter gives him a broad perspective on commercial arbitrations. Greg has an extensive international, transactional, governmental, entrepreneurial, legal, executive and geologic track record. He has been a senior executive at multiple large international corporations and the proprietor of his own business. In addition to having been General Counsel for an S&P 500 corporation, Greg has engaged in the private practice of law. He has worked in both the private and governmental sectors and has headed up a non-profit organization. Greg has done business in numerous disparate countries and has a demonstrated excellence in dispute resolution and the handling of complex matters involving multiple disciplines.

As an arbitrator, Greg V. Etter calls upon extensive international experience that gives him hands-on familiarity with the way business is done in many diverse countries and cultures. Greg spent the bulk of his career in the mining industry. He was Vice President and General Counsel of Battle Mountain Gold Company, a corporation listed on the New York, Toronto, Australian and Frankfurt exchanges. He was also a Vice President at Newmont Mining Corporation, which has operations on five continents. Among the countries where Greg has significant personal experience are: Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Honduras, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, and the United States.

Greg V. Etter’s broad legal experience is an attribute to his acting as an arbitrator. Greg was Vice President and General Counsel of Battle Mountain Gold Company, an international corporation listed on the New York and multiple foreign exchanges. While at Battle Mountain, Greg handled a broad variety of transactional matters, including the 3.25 billion dollar merger with Newmont Mining Corporation and numerous domestic and international joint ventures, leases, options and other agreements. He negotiated numerous contracts with foreign governments, including Contracts of Work in Indonesia and Joint Ventures in Bolivia. He managed the development of forms and procedures for negotiating Battle Mountain’s large scale construction contracts. Greg also managed arbitrations, mediations and numerous pieces of complex litigation. He also negotiated a Settlement Agreement with the Colorado Department of Health and the Environment; a Consent Decree with the U.S. Federal government; and a Permit Scheduling Agreement with various regulatory agencies in the State of Washington.

Prior to joining Battle Mountain, Greg was engaged in the private practice of law. He was one of the original members of Jeppson and Lee, the Nevada branch of Van Cott, Bagley, Cornwall and McCarthy. Greg’s legal practice focused on transactional work for the international mining industry. In addition to negotiating and drafting a broad variety of contracts, Greg advised on multiple mine financings and was involved in numerous pieces of complex litigation, including multiple royalty disputes.

Greg has been admitted to the bars of the states of Colorado, Idaho, Nevada and Texas. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas ADR Section. Greg graduated Magna Cum Laude, first in his class, Phi Kappa Phi, from Washburn University School of Law, after scoring in the 99th percentile on the LSAT. His course work in law school focused on commercial and natural resources law, including oil and gas and water rights.

Greg V. Etter’s transactional experience gives him an advantageous perspective as an arbitrator. He has personally negotiated a very broad variety of domestic and international agreements and has an in-depth understanding of all phases of commercial relationships.

As Vice President and General Counsel of Battle Mountain Gold, Greg negotiated numerous domestic and international joint ventures, leases, options and other contracts. He also negotiated numerous agreements with domestic and foreign governments, including Contracts of Work in Indonesia and Joint Ventures in Bolivia. He oversaw the development of forms and procedures for negotiating large scale construction contracts. Greg was integrally involved in all aspects of the 3.25 Billion Dollar merger of Battle Mountain and Newmont Mining Corporation.

Prior to joining Battle Mountain, Greg was engaged in the private practice of law, focusing on transactional work for the international mining industry. He advised clients on a large variety of contracts, including joint ventures; leases; options; deeds; purchase agreements; financing agreements; surface owner’s agreements; cotenants agreements; confidentiality agreements; access agreements; partition agreements; partnership agreements; and boundary agreements.

Greg V. Etter

Greg V. Etter brings broad executive experience to the table when acting as an arbitrator. Greg served as Vice President at both Newmont Mining Corporation and Battle Mountain Gold Company and as General Manager of the Upper Guadalupe River Authority.

Newmont is one of the world’s largest mining corporations, with operations on five continents. At Newmont, Greg was responsible for government affairs, public relations, social development and security. While at Newmont, he also served as V. P. and Executive Aide to the Chairman and CEO, working closely the Chairman on critical issues, projects and priorities.

Battle Mountain was an international company, listed on the New York and multiple foreign exchanges. At Battle Mountain, Greg had an integral role in the management of the company, in addition to being responsible for legal matters and domestic government and environmental affairs.

The Upper Guadalupe River Authority was established as a conservation and reclamation district by the Texas legislature in 1939 and is responsible for stewardship of the Upper Guadalupe and its tributaries. Greg restored the finances and reputation of this entity.

Governmental Affairs Experience

Greg V. Etter, international arbitrator, has extensive governmental affairs experience, both foreign and domestic. As Vice President at Newmont Mining Corporation and Vice President and General Counsel at Battle Mountain Gold Company, Greg’s responsibilities included government affairs. At Battle Mountain, he obtained, in less than sixty days, Congressional legislation specifically overturning an adverse decision of the Solicitor of the United States Department of the Interior. While at Battle Mountain, he was also responsible for the affairs of Crown Butte Resources, a Toronto Stock Exchange listed company, where he successfully resolved all aspects of the controversial New World matter, obtaining sixty-five million dollars from the United States. Greg has negotiated numerous agreements with domestic and foreign governments, including Contracts of Work in Indonesia and Joint Ventures in Bolivia. Most recently, Greg served as General Manager of the Upper Guadalupe River Authority and as a consultant to a member of the 69th Texas Legislature.

Entrepreneurial Experience

As an arbitrator, Greg V. Etter’s personal entrepreneurial experience allows him to understand the perspective of both smaller and new businesses. After serving for many years as an executive with large international mining companies, Greg established, and now manages, his own business, G.V. Etter L.L.C. This entity is dedicated to providing superior arbitration services. He also incorporated, and served as President of, a small corporation engaged in grass roots mineral exploration. In his legal practice, Greg has also had the opportunity to represent, and sit across the table from, many independent businessmen.

Greg V. Etter’s geologic background makes him a better arbitrator for two reasons. First, the disciplined, logical, analytical thought process required of a scientist is a valuable asset to an arbitrator. Second, Greg’s scientific background allows him to quickly grasp scientific concepts and data of import in the context of a commercial dispute.

Greg received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from Colorado State University in 1981. Greg’s undergraduate course work included biology, chemistry, hydrology, physics, and statistics. After graduating college, Greg was employed by Arco (Anaconda Minerals and Arco Exploration), where he was engaged in mineral and oil and gas exploration. Working throughout the Western United States as part of a small exploration team built the foundation of Greg’s knowledge of the minerals industry. This knowledge and Greg’s scientific background served him well in his career in the mining industry, where he ultimately became Vice President at two international corporations.
